Which Holy Book Is For Me?

Now that the interest in spiritual has been generated in us, the questions which troubles us are which books should we consider as important for our spiritual growth?
There are so many of them to choose from and all talk of different things so you will get confused. The Christians have the Bible, the Muslims have the Koran, the Jews have the Torah but the Hindus have so many of them.
For the Hindus the list begins with the Vedas and end up with the saints dairies like the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna to Sai Satcharitra!
This topic came to me since we tend to read a holy book during the month of Shravan.
There are books which are handed down to us by verbal or vocal rending and there are the ones which got written. The Shrutis and the Smritis.
Then the holy folks also wrote a ton of material which sometimes sounds so enormous that we just look at it and feel very small.
Just the case of Shankaracharya's literature would fill up an entire shelf. Then what is written about Osho or J.Krishnamurti or any other spiritual guide would be too much for understanding.
The parampara of a Guru would also fill up our book shelves to the brim.
So in answer to that question let me tell you that most of the heavy and profound books talk about the same stuff-the path of Self Realization.
Too many books will spoil the brains, so let us not talk of too many of them here.
Just consider ONE that will take you wherever you wish to go.
Maybe your Guru will tell you which one it is and if you do not have a Guru then the way of finding the special book is different.
Are you a simple minded person then any story book of a saint or God will help.
That means a book written about any saint or epic poems like the Ramayan or Mahabharat will do. just go for that which you can understand well and is written in a lucid style in the language of your choice. Just stick to that one book only and you can find a lot of answers in it.
Now if you are slightly intellectual then use some of the tougher texts like the Gita's or the Upanishads. They too have the same good old explanations but in a slightly twisted way. Go on read it and then contemplate on it.
I am sure you remember how you started with the Enid Blytons to Arthur Hailays to still more complex books in your material world.
In the same way you can select the type of holy book that appeals to you and are able to decipher the answers well.
Remember it should help you in finding out the truth and proceed further along the path.
I have seen a lot of people prefer the books which talk of sex and tantra and they think that path is for them since it is so exciting to read and digest that secret subject.
But then you got to be cautious since it is easy to fall down from that dangerous but excellent path.
The holy text should be able to appeal to your being and should give you answers for the complex worldly and spiritual questions that arise in your mind.
Let me assure you that the highest of the beings who has reached the Self does not depend on any book but for just in case he carries a Bhagavad Gita with him.
A small portable version of the Gita of Sri Krishna is sufficient enough to take us there, so do not go for complex books otherwise you will end up with a terrible headache.
This is a general write up for those who have started their journey in the spiritual and not for those who are the adepts. The ones who are with their Gurus should ask Him for advice and guidance.

This is one of the questions that a lot of people belonging to other religions ask the Hindus. They point out that the holy books you mention are but stories and give a lot of wrong advice. So many Hindus are pushed on the defensive and come out and say that they have the Gita. But how many can honestly say they understand the teachings and hidden meanings of the text? Your post is a good one since you have stressed on the point of faith. So if you believe in the story of Rama you read Ramayana and if you believe in Krishna, read the Mahabharata and so on..
