Selfless Love

Image
What is selfless love? What do you do to the people you love? You do things for them and you sacrifice for them. Haven't you seen your parents or spouse sacrifice for you? Maybe you haven't but at least you have heard what it means to sacrifice for someone else? Soldiers sacrifice their lives for the country, isn't that so? When you love someone and truly care for them then you go out of the way to make them comfortable. You eat the leftovers and offer them the better part of the meal. You eat the sides of the bread and offer them the soft part of it. If the butter is getting over then you butter their slices but not yours when you are cleaning out the butter box. The mother tucks her kids into bed and may stay awake when they are tired and sick but she won't sleep. You have read the story of the gift of Magi when you were a kid and have always wanted to emulate those characters. Even in love or marriage which is based on love, the one who is truly in love does

Unconditional Love

Just a few days back I answered one of my students about the meaning of love and how it disappears after the two get married. Let me elaborate here on that. Tom Cruise and Katy have a 3 year contract which they renewed this month for the next 3 years.Everyone was aghast at the terms mentioned in that. When two people fall in love they think that they can further stay in love 'till death does us part' and so they get married. Now let me tell you that marriage is a binding contract which can be terminated only by the legal recourse and not otherwise. Doesn't it clearly state that marriage is a legal and purely material way of looking at staying together! When material demands come up and legal issues crop up does it look like love to your eyes?? For me it seems like a contractual obligation and nonetheless binding on either parties by law. So where has true love gone? It has got embroiled into a legal rigmarole. So now I shall take you through the spiritual point of view. Ram
