The Tendencies

In the scriptures the tendencies are called 'vasanas' which we are born with and those that we gather during our stay here in this creation.
The tendencies never leave us during the lifetime. They can only be suppressed but never eradicated completely.
The tendency to indulge in booze or cigarettes or sex does not even go away if we are brainwashed completely. A person who is used to sleeping late, telling lies often, procrastinating, bullshitting, gambling, womanizing, getting angry at the slightest provocation, copying, worrying, and many more are the tendencies which require herculean efforts to just suppress them! They just lie dormant for someday to again get roused.
Our tendencies have a very peculiar way of rousing from deep sleep. They require some of the flimsiest reasons to get going.
Take the case of drinking. The person can give the silliest of reason for again taking to drinks. Maybe a breakdown in relationship, a difficult day at work, a celebration or any such silliest of reasons. Now we can have reasons aplenty to get back to our old ways.
Sometimes we have to fight the hardest to give them up but to restart it is so easy.
I have seen people swear by their kids and loved ones that this is the last peg that they are ever going to have but given the first opportunity they will get back to it.
And if you happen to ask them a reason for doing that they can give you a string of excuses.
The first thing a spiritual master does is to remove these tendencies which the student has gathered over a million lives. It is not an easy task and there are no guarantees to it since the student can go back to the same instantly.
The body has its reasons for getting there and falling down again and again.
There is no truer person who can say that I can never even feel the urge for that again.
The reason being we are never controlling the mind. It is controlling us.
Let us hope someday we can override these tendencies and say that I have things under my control now. God give them strength to overcome this demon called tendencies!
